US Senator. Educated at Harvard College, he was a member of the Massachusetts State Provincial Congress in 1775 and a delegate to the Massachusetts State constitutional convention of 1777, that ratified the Constitution of the United States in 1787. In 1791, he was elected to the United States Senate and served until 1796. He was appointed the first Secretary of the Navy in the Cabinet of President John Adams in 1798, but declined. He was a member of the executive council of Massachusetts, (1808-14). He also was the great-great-great-grandfather of US Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr.
