2nd wife of John Layton
Her parents crossed the Oregon Trail from Tennessee in 1852. She was one of an unknown number of children of Fielding T. and Lucinda (Moore) Lewis that made the trip. A letter from her mother, Lucinda, to her aunt, Elizabeth Lewis of Linn Co., Missouri, from June 25th, 1852 speaks of the hardships and illness while they were approximently 10 weeks from Fort Laramie, Wyoming. During this time, three children, siblings of Sarah's, and Sarah's mother died. Sarah's mother, Lucinda, was buried on the banks of the Snake River in Idaho Territory on August 22nd, 1852, leaving Sarah and any remaining children with only a father to care for them. Their father did remarry and lived to be 55 yrs. of age. He is buried at the Fern Ridge Cemetery in Sweet Home, Linn County, OR. Sarah married John Layton on Mar 19, 1861 in Linn County, OR and had the 1st of four children, John, at the age of 17. Her 2nd child, George, was born when she was 19, and her 3rd child, a daughter named Minnie, when Sarah was 22yrs. of age. Her 2nd daughter named Sarah Anne was b.Apr 8, 1874, but died just 10 days later, on Apr 18th, 1874. Sarah died 8 days after that, on April 26th, 1874. They are buried at Riverside Cemetery, although their burial site may be difficult to find. It was believed Sarah the mother and Sarah the daughter were buried together, although there was no proof of that, especially considering the time period between the two deaths. But someone walked the cemetery in 2011 to put the question to rest, and only one burial site was found, that of Sarah, the mother. We strongly believe that the baby is buried with her mother. May they both rest in peace.

Note: I am so grateful to PSH for locating Sarah's headstone, such as it is, and photographing it while it still exists. Thank you very much!!
