Herbert Cooke Beach, born 1861, in Whitby, Ontario, Canada, was the fifth of six children born to David and Sarah (Cooke) Beach, the other children, Herbert’s siblings, were Mary May, born 1854; Walter Hope, born 1855; Robert Cooke, born 1857; Emma Maud, born 1859; and Alice Victoria, born 1863. Tragically, Herbert’s brother, Robert, died just two months before Herbert’s birth and his sister, Alice, lived less than a year past her birth, leaving Herbert the youngest of four children.

Herbert’s father, David, a professor, took ill and died when Herbert was just five years old. When left a widow with four children, Herbert’s mother, Sarah, made the decision to place Herbert with an uncle, Mahlon Ford Beach, place Walter with his paternal grandparents, Mahlon and Mercy May Beach, and she took her two daughters to New Jersey to live near her brothers, William and George, and her mother, Mary Cooke.

When Herbert was in his late teens he moved to Manitoba and worked hauling freight and farming. Herbert married Margaret Milliken, daughter of James and Susan Jane (Blow) Milliken, on January 14, 1891, in Killarney, Manitoba. During the four year period Herbert and Margaret lived in Killarney, Manitoba, three children were born: James William, born 1892; Susan Elizabeth, born 1893; and Alice, born 1895. In 1896 Herbert moved the family to a farm near St. John, N.D., and became US citizens. While living in St. John, their fourth child, a boy, Walter Raymond, was born. In 1906 Herbert moved the family to Mountain Home, Idaho. Two years after arriving in ID, Alice, their youngest daughter, became ill and died. They adopted a young girl, Ruth, to help fill the void that was left in the family by the loss of Alice.

Herbert lived and worked on the east side of Mountain Home for the remainder of his life. Herbert’s wife, Margaret, died in 1941 and Hebert died in 1950.
