Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. Served as a General in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was elected to represent Iowa's 6th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving first from 1879 to 1881, then from 1885 to 1889. He was a candidate for President of the United States in 1880 and 1892. He was the Great-Grandfather of "Dennis The Menace" cartoonist Hank Ketcham.
