OVERLAND PARK — John Edgar Daley, 91, of Overland Park, formerly of Parsons, passed away at 3:19 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2011, at Villa St. Francis Care Facility in Olathe.

He was born Aug. 14, 1919, in Parsons to John Sylvester and Mary (Steils) Daley. During World War II, he served in the United States Army and, upon his honorable discharge, returned to his hometown of Parsons.

He was instrumental with helping usher in the use of computers for the railroad in the 1970s. This experience inspired him to audit every course available at Labette Community College which dealt with computer programming and usage. He authored eight books on the history of the Katy Railroad listing the employees and positions over the years for the Parsons Katy hub.

Tennis was another lifelong passion, and through the years he taught many of the young children in Parsons to enjoy the game. In his honor, the John Daley Tennis Tournament is held each summer in Forest Park in Parsons.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons and a 3rd-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

On June 10, 1946, he married Mary Catherine "Kitty" Altepeter at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. The couple were blessed with four children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In 2004, they moved to Overland Park to be near family. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2009.
