He was born on Nov. 3, 1927, in Manitowoc, Wis., the only child of Mead F. and Evelyn (Woerfel) Hansen. He graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School in 1945 and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Signal Corps. On Sept. 14, 1948, he married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Monica Leona Maresch in Manitowoc.
Mead dedicated his life to education. He was a well-respected educator for over 45 years in the Wisconsin School system. He helped organize the Wisconsin Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and was Executive Director for ten years. He also worked for CESA-7 and helped teacher candidates at UW-Green Bay.
Mead Hansen is survived by his wife of 62 years, Monica; his six children and their spouses, William Hansen and Diane Gorychka, Manitowoc; Linda Hansen and Dave Nickels, Two Rivers; Jennifer and Roger Levendusky, Sturgeon Bay; Paul and Kathy Hansen, Arlington, Va.; Martha and Eric Gename, Ellison Bay; Sarah and Doug Schoenwalder, Green Bay; and six granddaughters, Margaret Hansen, Emily Hansen and boyfriend, Kevin Kralik, Katherine Levendusky, Elizabeth Levendusky, Stacy Schoenwalder, and Rebecca Schoenwalder.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 11, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Konkol as celebrant. Burial will be at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Cemetery in Maplewood.
Military honors will be provided at St. Joseph Catholic Church following the Mass.
