Robert Burton Langworthy, 92, died on Sunday, March 6, 2011. Bob was born at home in a snowstorm on December 24, 1918. His parents, Herman Moore and Minnie (Leach) Langworthy preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 318 E. 55th St., KCMO 64113, where he was confirmed in 1930, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2011. A reception will follow the service. Bob was a lifelong resident of the Kansas City area. He graduated from Southwest High School where he met Betty Miles. They were married on January 2, 1942, a loving marriage that lasted until her death in 2006. They are survived by their children: David Robert (wife Karen) Langworthy, Joan Elizabeth Langworthy Tomek (husband Steve) and Mark Burton Langworthy. Bob graduated from Princeton University in 1940 and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1943. He served in the Naval Supply Corps during WWII and then in the Naval Reserve. He taught continuing education classes in probate law for many years and was chairman of several Missouri State Bar commissions. Bob ran for public office in the 60's and 70's and was appointed by then Governor Kit Bond to head the Kansas City Election Board in 1973. For decades, congregational meetings at Second Presbyterian Church began by naming Bob Langworthy as Parliamentarian. He served as the Presbytery Parliamentarian for 30 years. He was Moderator of the Heartland Presbytery and chaired many Presbytery and Synod committees. Also Bob chaired a General Assembly Committee on Representation to assure that minorities were represented. He was on the Session of Second church on four separate occasions. Recently Bob was honored for 80 years of volunteer service to the YMCA by the Y's Metropolitan Board of Greater Kansas City. His longtime service began as a member of High Y in high school. He was active continuously since then. He served on the Metropolitan Board for the YMCA in Greater Kansas City, the Y's Foundation Board, and served two terms on the Y's national board. In addition, he was a member of the board for the Sioux Indian YMCA as well as serving 25 years on the Y's Estes Park Board of Directors in Colorado. In addition to his parents and his wife, Bob was preceded in death by his brother Herman and sister Dorcas. He is survived by his children; four grandchildren: John, Brandon, Ann, and Jim Langworthy; his niece Barbara Bever; his nephew John; his sister-in-law Barbara Kaufman and her children Miles, Cyndi Goldfarb, Dan, and Earl, and four great grandchildren. Gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, the YMCA of the Rockies (Estes Park, CO 80511), the YMCA of Greater Kansas City (3100 Broadway, KCMO 64111), or the Sioux Indian YMCA (Dupree, SD 57623). A man that needs to be remembered.
A man who, according to all those who he worked with, practiced law until his death.
He will be missed.
