Clarence Raymond "Corn" Close, 84 of Prineville, died Monday, November 29, 2004 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital.

Corn was born the son of Otto and Sylvia (Savage) Close on Apr 19, 1920 in McCall, Idaho. He attended school in McCall and following graduation he went to work on a construction crew in Samoa. When WWII started he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became a top gunner on a B-24. They flew many missions over the South Pacific including the bombing of Iwo Jima. He was the recipient of two Good Conduct medals, the Air Medal and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. Following WWII he moved to Central Oregon, where he drove logging trucks for many years and then in 1972 he operated Ochoco Sales and Service in Prineville, where he repaird power saws and small engines.

He loved to hunt and was known as an excellent marksman, winning many first place awards in expert and master class rifle championships. In his early years he played baseball for the Prineville team. He played golf all of his life and had nine holes-in-one to his credit.

He was married in 1946 to Marie Allen. They had two daughters and then later were divorced. He married Ardys Houston Robirds on April 23, 1979 in Reno, Nevada. He was a charter and life member of the Prineville Elks Lodge, and belonged to the Prineville Golf and Country Club since it started. He was a life member of the VFW and belonged to Payette Idaho Order of the Masonic Lodge, the Prineville Eagles Lodge, and the Crook County Historical Society. He was exceptionally witty and had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be missed by his many friends and family.

He is survived by his wife Ardys of Prineville; daughters Gayle and her husband Mike Graven of Goodyear, Arizona, and Luurie and her husband Fred Wall of Oakley, California; step-daughters Anita and her husband Mark Endresen of Silverton, Oregon, and Linda and her husband Kim Christensen of Prineville, Oregon; grandchildren Darren Tooley, Christina Miller, Brandy Hasse, Keri Grimes, Jeremy Smalling and Cassandra and Aaron Post, and eleven great grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother Creston "Creek" Close of Bend, sisters Edith Cummings of Beatty, Nevada, and Lois Wilde of McCall, Idaho, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, three sisters and step-daughter Alona Smalling.

A memorias Service will be held at the Prineville Golf and Country Club on Saturday, December 4, at 1 p.m.

Donations in Lieu of flowers may be made to a charity of your choide. Arrangements are under the direction of Prineville Funeral Home and Prineville Heritage Crematory.
