Melissa was the oldest child of Challmer and Martha Dickson. A highly intelligent, perceptive girl, Melissa graduated from McKeesport High School in the steel town of McKeesport, Pennsylvania. She played the violin in the school orchestra.

In 1921, Melissa graduated from Indiana (Pennsylvania) State Normal School, now Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She and her younger sister Cristy went on to teach for many years in the McKeesport public schools, where they had received their education.

Melissa never married. This gentle spirit lived most of her life at home with her mother Mattie or her sister Cristy. After Cristy's death in 1972, Melissa continued to live alone in the house they had shared for many years in White Oak. She accepted little help even in her nineties. In her final years, she received some care at home, but continued to prize her independence.
