Cree was the middle child of Challmer and Martha Dickson. Born with a developmental disability, she lived with the family well into adulthood. Cree was close to her two sisters, Cristy and Melissa. Because their father had died so young, the three girls lived with their mother in the home of their maternal grandparents.

This was a gentle family that prized hard work and harmony at home, and regular attendance at a nearby Presbyterian church. The girls lived a quiet life and enjoyed one another's company. One of their hobbies was collecting teaspoons and teacups. Included in the collection were several with Cree's monogram, LCD.

Although her first name was Lucy, she was always known as Cree. This name most likely entered the family as a surname. Cree's maternal grandfather was named David Cree Dickson after his uncle, David Cree (husband of Deborah Dickson).

Around 1936, the family moved Cree to Woodville State Hospital. The reasons are not clear, because she participated fully in family life until that time.
