Charles was the son of George Bedford & Anna or Hannah Todd. He married Elizabeth Knowles on 4 AUG 1843 in England. They were the parents of Charles, Anna (died in England), William, Alfred, Mary Jane, Thomas, and Arthur (died in England).

Oct 30, 1896 - Carroll Sentinel - Charles Bedford of Pleasant Valley township died at his home Wednesday night after an illness of about three weeks. He was first taken sick with the grippe and so far recovered as to be able to be out. He took cold about two weeks ago and erysipelas set in. From that time he failed rapidly and for the last few days his relatives gave up all hopes of his recovery.

The deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of this county, having located on the farm where he died in 1872. A brief sketch of his life appears in the history of Carroll county from which we learn that he was born in York, Yorkshire, England, in 1817. He was reared a farmer and also at an early age learned the trade of a brick layer. He lived in England until 1870, when with his wife and five children he came to the United States. Deciding to locate in Carroll county he bought 160 acres of wild land. With the help of his sons he added to this until he owned 720 acres and had it all under a high state of cultivation.

Mr. Bedford was married August 1843, to Miss Elizabeth Knowles, a native of Yorkshire, four of the children survive him: William, Alfred, Mary Jane, and Thomas. A son, Charles, died in Carroll county at the age 30. The deceased has always taken an interest in and has been a liberal supporter of both the cause of religion and that of education.

His devoted wife died ten years ago this month. She, being ten years his senior, both thus lived to the same age within a few days.

The deceased was one of the leading citizens in this county for many years and was universally respected by all who knew him. No man stood higher in esteem of his fellows than he and his death will be deeply regreted. The funeral exercises were held at the home this morning, after which the body was taken to the city cemetery, escorted by a long line of friends, where it was laid to rest.
