He enlisted December 28, 1863 at Denmark, Tuscola County, Michigan, in Company D, Michigan 23rd Infantry Regiment on December 31, 1865.

He was mustered out on 15 June 1865 and transferred to Company F, Michigan 28th Infantry Regiment on 15 June 1865. Mustered out on 21 May 1866 at Wilmington, NC.

Squire's first wife was Amelia Berry, whom he married in Tuscola County, Michigan on September 6, 1861. They had one known child, John Haines, but divorced in August 1870.

On December 28, 1870 Squire married Susan A. Holden, daughter of Robert and Mary Holden, in Tuscola County, Michigan. Their known children were John R., Mattie M., Roy W., Mary, Harry, and Georgie R. Haines.
