John's schooling was limited. During the Civil War, he enlisted in Company A, Eightieth Illinois Infantry, in August, 1862. He was discharged the in 1863 due to disabilities. He volunteered to serve in the artillery and served in that capacity at the battle of Perryville, Kentucky.
Curless was a farmer.
He first married Lavina Franklin on April 5, 1866. He then married Mrs. Sarah Evans (widow of John Evans). John and Sarah had two children, Charlotte and French. Sarah had a son, James A. Evans, from her previous marriage.
