Born June 16, 1853 in Candor, Wash. Cnty., PA and died June 21, 1921 in NJ. His middle name was McNall. He was the son of James and Jane (McNall) Farrar. Husband of Ellen J. Merrick.

JAMES McNALL FARRAR, D.D., LL.L.,
Son of James and Jane (McNall) Farrar, was born June 16,1853, in Candor, Pa. He made a public confession of his faith in the Second United Presbyterian Church of New Wilmington, Pa., at the age of sixteen. His preparatory studies were pursued in the Preparatory Department of West-
minster College, New Wilmington, Pa., and he graduated from Westminster College in 1875. Entering the Seminary at Princeton in the fall of the same year, he took the full three years' course there, graduating in 1878. He was licensed by the United Presbyterian Presbytery of Frankford, April 30, 1878, was ordained by the U. P. Presbytery of Wheeling, Dec. 10, 1878, being at the same time installed pastor of the United Presbyterian Church of Harrisville, Ohio, from which he was released June 10, 1884. He was pastor of the Fourth U. P. Church, Philadelphia, from Sept. 29, 1884, to May 29, 1890, and pastor of the First Reformed Church of Brooklyn, N. Y,, from Sept. 25, 1890, to Dec. 31, 1916. After this he resided in Brooklyn until 1919. During this time he supplied the Fort Washington Reformed Church, New York City, from April to July 19 17, and was acting pastor of the Lewis Avenue Congregational Church, Brooklyn, for two years. He then resided in Mahwah, N. J., until his death there, June 22, 192 1, of heart failure, in the 69th year of his age. For a short time before his death he was acting pastor of the Ramapo Church, Mahwah. He died while in sleep. He was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn. He received the degree of A.M. from Westminster College, Pennsylvania, in 1904; the honorary degree of D.D. from Westminster College, Tennessee, in 1891, and the honorary degree of LL.D., from Ursinus College in 1909. He published among other things "A Junior Congregation, 1908; Little Talks to Little People, 1910, and Chats with Children of the Church, 1912. He was president of the General Synod of the Reformed Church in America, 1905-06, and of the Board of Domestic Missions of that Church from 191 1 until his death. He was a director of the Bible Training School, New York City. He was a member of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, of the Board of Superintendents of the Theological Seminary at New Brunswick, N. J., of the Board of Superintendents of the Theological Seminary at Holland, Mich., and of the Board of Education of New York City for some years after 1913. He was married Oct. 22, 1879, in Kennett Square, Pa., to Ella Jane Merrick, who with five sons and one daughter survives him.
