ELKHART - Eva Mary Thompson, 88, of Elkhart and formerly of Stratford Commons passed away on Monday evening, March 7, 2011 at Riverside Village. She was born on August 17, 1922 in Devils Lake, N.D. to the late Frank J. and Christine (Keller) Burckhard. She married Arlo John Thompson on Feb. 22, 1943 in Devils Lake, N.D.; he died June 9, 1986.
Surviving are three sons, Arlo J. (Cecilia) Thompson and Ron R. (Linda) Thompson both of Elkhart, and Gary F. (Kathy) Thompson of Grand Forks, N.D., a daughter, Karen K. Thompson of Mishawaka, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, along with four sisters, Theresa McWilliams, Bismark, N.D., Betty (Leo) Johnson, Annandale, Minn., Janette Zigler of Arlington, Texas and Bonnie (Don) Woodward of Seattle. Brothers, Frank Burckhard of Grand Forks, N.D. and James (Janis) Burckhard of New Mexico.
Eva was preceded in death by a grandson, Todd McKenzie and her sister Ann Martens.
Eva worked in the office at Nickles Bakery for 17 years, retiring in 1987. She was a 1940 graduate of Devils Lake (N.D.) High School and was a long-time member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church. Eva was a member of TOPPS, enjoyed traveling, cooking, drawing and art. Most important to her was her Catholic faith and her family.
Friends may visit with the family from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2011 at the Billings Funeral Home 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart., where a parish rosary will be prayed beginning at 5 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, March 14, 2011 at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church 1108 S. Main St. Elkhart, Rev. Glenn Kohrman will officiate, friends may call for 1 hour prior to the Mass. Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Vincent Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The St. Vincent DePaul Society, 3408 Ardmore Trail, South Bend, IN 46628
