Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He graduated from Shelburne Falls Academy Massachusetts, in 1859, moved to Wisconsin, in 1863, where he became a successful businessman and railroad executive. He began his political career when appointed Postmaster of Milwaukee and held the position (1876-88). He was president of the Milwaukee and Northern Railroad. (1890-93), president of the Milwaukee Street Railway Company (1892-95), president of the Wisconsin Telephone Compnay, (1889-99) and president of the Calumet Terminal Railway (1894-96). In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him Post Master General Cabinet Secretary and hedied in office at age 60.
