U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Union College, Schenectady, in 1829, studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Buffalo, New York. He was assistant New York Secretary of State, (1829-31), a member of the New York State Assembly, (1833-34, 51) surrogate of Erie County, (1833-36) and president of the Commercial Bank of Buffalo, (1840-42). In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, was appointed by President Buchanan as Postmaster of Buffalo, New York, ( 1859-61) and was the commissioner to negotiate a reciprocity treaty between the United States and the Dominion of Canada, (1869-70). He also was prominent in elevator enterprises, where he built the Marine and Empire building’s elevators in Buffalo, New York.
