Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish rosary/vigil at 5 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Monday.
Yvonne was born July 20, 1940, to Orville and Shirley (Quigley) Gandrud on a farm near Donnybrook. She attended a rural elementary school near Coulee and graduated from Stanley High School. She met her husband Merlyn Engelhard (Glenburn) of 40 years at a dance in Burlington. They were united in marriage April 7, 1961, at St. Leo's Catholic Church and raised their children, residing in Minot, Kansas and Mandan.
Vonnie had a full-time job staying at home raising her children. She was naturally inclined in music, playing accordion, organ and guitar; she would glide across the floor as she loved dancing. Always having projects, she never sat still whether it was enjoying her garden, baking, or sewing. She was very talented creating many crafts; designing her children's birthday cakes and valentine boxes was a work of art. She also worked a few part-time jobs that brought her joy by helping others. Above all, Vonnie loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Her fun loving spirit will be dearly missed by her children, Craig Engelhard (Mona), Judson, Jodi Zahn (Arnie), Paul Engelhard (Celeste) and Janette Fetch (Mick), all of Bismarck, DeVone Norman (Kelly), Utah, and Tamra Stubbs and Myron Engelhard, both of Mandan; 19 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; her brother, Ivan Gandrud (Peggy), Bismarck; sister, Blenda Burkart (Terry), Burlington; and brother-in-law, Marty Christenson, Minot.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merlyn Engelhard; sisters, Orvetta Kay Gandrud and Debbie Christensen; and parents Orville and Shirley Gandrud.
God watched you as you suffered and he knew you had your share. He gently closed your weary eyes and took you in his care. God had you in his keeping, we have you in our hearts. Your memory is our keepsake, with that we'll never part. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So, He put His arms around you, "Come with Me." With tearful eyes we watched how you suffered and faded away. Although we Love you dearly, we could not make you stay. The golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us that He only takes the best. — Author unknown.
