FORT MILL - The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Fort Mill, S.C. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Philip Harkey officiating. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery.
Born in Fort Mill, S.C., Mr. Harkey was the seventh of eight children born to the late Harry David Harkey and Eva Parks Harkey. He graduated from Fort Mill High School in the 1930's. Mr. Harkey was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran who served in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific and was a member of the Eli Bailes American Legion Post No. 43. Mr. Harkey was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Mill, where he served as a deacon, usher and Sunday school department treasurer. He was a co-owner of Fort Mill Dry Cleaners. Mr. Harkey was a loyal donor for the American Red Cross.
Surviving are his son, Paul K. "P.K." Harkey Jr. of Columbia; his daughter, Jane Hinnant and her husband, Milton, of Winnsboro; three grandchildren, Kristin Harkey and her husband, Dr. Jeff Johansson, Dr. Ben Hinnant and his wife, Dr. Emily Hinnant, and Sally Caver and her husband, John; and two great-grandchildren, Jack Caver and Tess Johansson. Mr. Harkey was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mildred "Pat" Gardner Harkey, in 2010.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy, 847 Case St., Hendersonville, NC 28792.
