U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced to practice law in East Aurora, New York. He was district attorney for Erie County (1857-59), and a member of the New York State Senate (1863-64). In 1865, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses, serving until 1869. Not a candidate for reelection, he was judge to the Superior Court of Buffalo, New York, (1871-73) and practiced law until his death.
