Mary was the only child of Elmer and Emma (Schaeffer) Woomer.
She was born in 1912 on her family farm in West Penn Township and was baptized June 30 of the same year.
She married Frederick John Smith in Elkton, Maryland in 1931 at the age of 19. She and her husband lived there with her parents after their marriage and she remained there after Fred's death in 1977 until her own death at the age of 98 in 2012. They had one daughter, Marjorie.
She was a member of Zion's Stone Church in West Penn Township and of the Atlas 25 Year Club.
Prior to retiring she was employed for 30 years on the cap line of the former Atlas Powder Company, Reynolds.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening and mowing the lawn with her tractor. She was an avid baseball and football fan, watching the Baltimore Orioles, Phillies and the Eagles on TV as well as going to the games.
Mary was a strong independent Pennsylvania Dutch woman. She was known to climb out onto her roof to shovel snow off even in her ninety's. On occasion, some German would spill out especially when she was excited or surprised.
Known as Nana to her family, she was loving and gentle. Her home was warm and welcoming. She loved to spoil the little ones with gifts and their favorite foods. Shoo fly cake was one of her specialties.
