Ollie Ethel Carter was the daughter of Thomas James Carter and Sarah Elizabeth Burch. Thomas had been a widower with children by his previous marriage, but Ollie was Sarah's first child.

During Ollie's childhood she saw the birth of six more siblings and the death of a few. Two of Ollie's siblings died in 1896. In 1904, when Ollie was not yet thirteen, both her father and her step-sister Cordelia died. This left Ollie the oldest of the six remaining Carter children.

It would have been almost impossible for a single woman of the time to support so many young children, so Ollie's mother remarried in 1906. Ollie gained a step-father, Martin W. May, and seven more step-siblings. Her mother had three more children by her second marriage, bringing the household to an even 20 children by 1913.

The same year Ollie's youngest sister was born, Ollie married, and moved to a much smaller, much quieter household. Ollie married Ira Doub Sullivan 21 Dec 1913.

Ollie and Ira had both been raised in farming families, but at the time of their marriage they did not own any property. Ira worked for the Johnson Stone Co as a switchman and later became a machinist or mechanic. They rented in the early part of their marriage, but later purchased a house on West 7th street in Bloomington.

Ollie and Ira had two children who they named after their parents:

Thomas Warren Sullivan 1915 – 1994
Lula Elizabeth Sullivan 1917 – 2005

Ollie and Ira were both long-lived. She passed away first in 1979 at the age of 87. Ira died in 1983 at the age of 91.
