Erick was born on September 24, 1879 in Byneset parish, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway. Erik was the son of Johan Larssen Graneggen and Ingeborg Eriksdatter Graneggen. Erick's mother Ingeborg passed away in 1885. His father subsequently got remarried to Gurina Torgersdatter Esp in April of 1889. Erick was raised on the Graneggen farm in Byneset, Norway by Johan and Gurina.

At age 19, Erick immigrated to America in and arrived in New York City on April 2, 1899 aboard the steamship S.S. Lucania. According to the S.S. Lucania's passenger manifest, Erick's ultimate destination was Melville, Montana and his point-of-contact in Melville was listed as John Torgersen Esp (i.e., his step-mother's brother). John Esp is listed as a "friend" on that manifest.

In 1900, Erick was residing in Melville, Montana, working as a "farm laborer/hired man" for Cornelius M. Rein.

Erick had a full-sister named Lava Johansdatter Graneggen (born October 15, 1877 in Byneset, Norway) who immigrated to America in 1901 aboard the steamship S.S. Saxonia. Lava married Theodore Kyppen and settled in Lennep, Montana, where she is buried.

Additionally, Erick had four step-brothers (Ingebrigt, Tilmar, Bjarne, and Jørgen) and three step-sisters (Annette, Randi, and Gunalie) via Johan Larssen Graneggen's marriage to Gurina Torgersdatter Esp.

Erick died on July 25, 1915 at the age of 35 in Sweet Grass County, Montana as a result of cerebral meningitis, and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Big Timber, Montana.
