Roderick "Rut" Leo Newell, 79, of Parkersburg died Thursday, May 5, 2005, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Eugene James and Leola Mazzela Smoot Newell.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in various areas including Iowa Jima on the AKA USS Star, where he received several medals. He had worked for Fulton Refrigeration, Kaiser Aluminum and retired from E.I. DuPont after 27 years. He had served as Little League coach for the Worthington League from 1949-1987 and as coach for Pee Wee Wrestling for more than 20 years, Junior High and High School wrestling and had the honor of coaching the youngest U.S. Olympic wrestler. He was an avid golfer playing on the senior league at West Virginia Golf Club and Worthington. He was a member of the Parkersburg Council 594 of the Knights of Columbus, St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and a former member of American Legion Post 15.

Rod is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie Bailey Newell; children, Roderick M. Newell and wife, Nancy, of New England, W.Va., Rebecca L. Humphrey and husband, Dave, of Coolville, Terry Sheff and husband, George, of Little Hocking, Scott Newell and wife, Julie, of Parkersburg, Tina Gates and husband, Mark, of Belpre, Chris Newell and wife, Mary, of Waverly, and Matt Newell and wife, Tonya, of Vienna; 24 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Dottie Newell of Parkersburg, Virginia Newell of Austin, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Rod was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Joseph and Robert Newell; and two sisters, Ruth Sietz and Rita Howarth.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Shaju Abraham officiating. Burial will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with a Christian wake service 7:30 p.m.
