Survivor of the Irish Potato Famine, Samuel arrived in Canada and then came to New York. Siblings followed in the ensuing years as money was saved.

One sibling, William Clay did not come to the US. He was warned off by his siblings who did not find life in America all they had hoped for. William went to Australia instead and managed to make a fortune in the gold fields of Bendigo.

In the mid 1990s a book was written about the Clays, featuring excerpts from a diary and transcribed letters the siblings and a variety of friends exchanged between New York, Ireland and Australia. "Tenants No More" can be difficult to find, but worth the effort for someone researching this family.
