Edmund was born in 1799, the 3rd of 15 children of Richard Taylor, Jr. & Mary Stubbs Taylor, and was named for his mother's brother.

He married first in 1821 to Elizabeth S. Clay, niece of statesman Henry Clay, and she died the following year without children. Edmund married second in 1824 to Louisa Brown Hart, niece of Henry Clay's wife Lucretia, and they had one child before Louisa died in 1825:
1. Thomas Hart, b. 31 Jul 1825

He married third in 1831 to Martha Southgate Taylor (no relation) and they had three children before Martha died in 1858:
2. Mary Belle, b. 16 May 1837
3. Edmund Haynes, b. 08 May 1840, d. 04 May 1843
4. Lucy Thom, b. 15 Jun 1847

Edmund married fourth in 1861 to Elizabeth Sarah Fall and they had three children:
5. Philip Fall, b. 07 Jan 1864
6. Sallie Jouett, b. 04 Nov 1865
7. Edmund Haynes II, b. 15 Sep 1867

Edmund served as Quartermaster General of Kentucky, cashier of the Commonwealth Bank, and cashier of the Bank of Kentucky in Frankfort. He died in 1873 when his youngest child was only five years of age. Edmund's portrait by Matthew Jouett hangs in the Speed Museum at Louisville KY.
