John Charles Walton, Age 84, died July 10, 2000 at Vanderbilt Hospital, of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Biles Walton (1888-1963) and his mother, Effie Mary Ellen King Walton (1890-1976); his sister, Sue Walton Cherry; and grandsons, Tim Walton and Don Walton. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia Young Walton; his sons, Charlie (Kay) Walton of Liburn, Georgia and Doug (Sherry) Walton of Nashville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Rick (Melinda) Walton of Hopeville, Georgia, Amy Walton of Norwich, Connecticut, Katie Walton of Nashville, Tennessee; and a sister, Charlotte Walton Anderson of Nashville, Tennessee.

Mr. Walton, a descendent of Nashville, Tennessee founder James Robertson, was listed in the First Families of Tennessee. He attended Central High School and Duncan Preparatory School and was an Army Veteran of World War II. He spent over 30 years in the grocery business, owning and operating various neighborhood stores around Nashville; was one of the founders of the BiRite-Foodtown Corporation; then over 30 years in the real estate business as founder and president of John Walton Realty Company. He was a Deacon of Green Hills Church of Christ for 12 years and a member of West End Church of Christ for the past 34 years.

As Mr. Walton was a participant in the Anatomical Gifts Program of Vanderbilt Medical School. A memorial celebration of his life of service is scheduled for 4 PM, Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at the West End Church of Christ.
