Carl and I met, and became great friends when we were boys, 9 years old, in the fourth grade of Saint Matthew parochial school in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia. Carl and his family moved to West Philadelphia, so I did not see him for several years. However, we resumed contact with one another throughout the years. When Carl's father operated the Tally Ho Bar on Rising Sun Avenue in Philadelphia, I sometimes helped Carl by working in the bar...for free. I used to stay overnight, in a spare bed in Carl's room, at the living quarters, which were above the bar. Next door, lived a beautiful blonde girl named Evelyn. Both Carl and I dated Evelyn off and on. Carl had a favorite record store in Olney, and the two of us would go there to shop occasionally. In the early 1950s, I bought a tape recorder, and Carl sang the song "Swanee" on a tape which I still have. In the mid-1950s, we both had jobs, with different companies, but in the same downtown Philadelphia area. So, we would meet and eat together, after work. We shared many a laugh. Carl's family had a vacation house, which I believe was near Quakertown. He took me there to spend several days with his family. Carl had a vivid imagination, and must have thought that I was something of a dunce. Because even in the 1960s, he was still trying to convince me that he was a secret agent for the CIA. In the 1980s, I gave Carl my old reel-to-reel tape recorder along with many tapes. But, some time afterwards, he returned these to me, saying he could not use them. I believe that was the last time I ever saw him. Carl married a lady named Annette Mina.
