Sister Elizabeth Marie Willenbring (SMP), age 98, of Valley City, ND, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at Maryvale Convent near Valley City. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 23 at Maryvale Convent Chapel with Father Claude Seeberger, OSB celebrant. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Maryvale Convent Chapel and one hour before the service Friday morning. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday evening at Maryvale Convent Chapel. Interment will be in Maryvale Convent Cemetery near Valley City in the spring.

Born Rose Willenbring, Sister Elizabeth Marie, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Backes) Willenbring, was born November 26, 1910 at Foxholm, ND. She attended country grade school and high school at Notre Dame Academy in Willow City, ND. She joined the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation in 1927 and made her first vows in 1929 in Broons, France. After she made her vows, she went to Guernsey Islands to teach in the music department of a girls' boarding school. She returned to the United States in 1931 to continue her education. She received her Bachelor's Degree from the College of Great Falls in Montana. For forty-eight years she taught in grade and high schools in Willow City, Wild Rice, Oakwood, Oakes, Valley City, Harvey, Lisbon and Walhalla, all in North Dakota. She also taught music and was choir director and organist at several parishes. After her teaching career, she took an extensive course in Pastoral Care at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL. She was certified by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains in 1978. She served as a Pastoral Care Chaplain in Spring Valley, IL and later in Harvey, ND until January, 1990 when she retired to Maryvale Convent near Valley City, ND.

Sister Elizabeth Marie is survived by her Religious Community, The Sisters of Mary of the Presentation; five sisters, Lenora Spalla, New Salem, OR, Delores Odermann, Minot, ND, Marjorie Thompson, Texas, Marlene Cawley, Denver, CO and Kay Vicha, Minot, ND; two brothers, Bob Willenbring, Bismarck, ND and Don Willenbring, Foxholm, ND.
