and Bessie Lee Barrens Stafford

Pursued a career in education: Graduated with both Bachelor of Science and Master of
Science degrees from Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas; and Education
Doctorate degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York

Married Eula Mae Patrick of Tuskegee, Alabama

Father to Gwendolyn, Sharon, Patrick, Pamela, Lisa and Paul Stafford

Dr. GEORGE HOWARD STAFFORD's distinguished professional career spanned almost half a
century and was centered in the areas of teacher education and creating the means to open
academic opportunities to all students. He served as high school coach and agriculture
teacher at Brenham, Texas; and Assistant Principal and Director of People Personnel
Services at George Junior Republic, Freeville, New York. On the graduate level, he was
dedicated to Prairie View A&M University, serving for 44 years in the areas of Technician
in the American-Liberian Project; Professor of Agricultural Economics; Director of
Counseling Services; Director of Admissions; Athletic Director; and Director of the
Developmental Studies, Testing, and Advising Center

Dr. STAFFORD was an instrumental member of several committees, including "The
Committee of Twenty-Five," appointed by President John F. Kennedy to study education
problems of America's youth; the "Secretary of the Navy Task Force,"
established to study transition problems of navy personnel; the "Texas Plan for
Desegregation: the Texas A&M University System Target 2000 Committee," which set the
goals for the system into the millennium; the "United States Department of
Education's National Commission on Excellence," whose report, ‘A Nation at Risk,'
identified the inadequacies and proposed remedies for the nation's educational needs; and
the "NCAA Academic Eligibility Committee," assessing academic and eligibility
standards for Division I athletes. Dr. Stafford additionally served as Consultant to the
American College Testing Program and Educational Testing Service

Dr. GEORGE HOWARD STAFFORD was an active member of the Prairie View A&M University
Athletic Club; Panther Club; and served as Chairman of the American-Liberian Reunion
Project. He has the designation of being an inductee to the Prairie View A&M University
Sports Hall of Fame (baseball, basketball, and football)
