His grandfather, Halvor Andersen, had a cabin and pasture for animals in Nordre Grava near Porsgrunn, Telemark County, Norway in the summer months. Isach Pedersen sold this property to Halvor Andersen in 1853. It later belonged to his son, Karl Halvorsen as noted in the Census of 1865. It then passed to Hans Andreas Karlsen and would have gone to his eldest son, Clarence Carlson, except Clarence, who then lived in the United States, gave it to his youngest brother, Edvin Karlsen, in exchange for his taking care of their parents for the rest of their lives. That farm has been in the Karlsen Family continuously since 1853. Some of Edvin's children and grandchildren live on some of that property today.
