OBITUARY for Glenn S. Miller
March 21, 1913 — Oct. 22, 2006
Glenn S. Miller passed away Oct. 22, 2006. Funeral services were conducted from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home Oct. 25, with the Rev. James Flatt, Dr. Garry Speich and the Rev. Martha Hale officiating. Special music was provided by Ann Looney and Kathy Gilray. Interment in Green Acres Memory Gardens.
Mr. Miller was born March 21, 1913, in Grandview, TN, the son of Arthur V. and Martha Tempie (Parham) Miller. His family moved to Crossville in 1925, and later to the Dorton community, where he resided until his death. He graduated from Cumberland County High School in 1934, and was named to the CCHS Hall of Fame in 2005.
Mr. Miller served in the United States Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He was a Cumberland County Commissioner from 1952-1956. He retired from two careers. He first served as a sales manager for Crab Orchard Stone Company, and later Turner Brothers Stone; his sales career began in 1933, at Crab Orchard, and continued at Turner Bros. through the mid '70s. His second career was as executive director of United Fund of Cumberland County from 1970 to 2000.
Mr. Miller was best known for his life of service to family, church and community. He served in every available lay capacity in the Dorton United Methodist Church from 1933 to his death. He was a charter member of the Crossville Breakfast Rotary Club, serving as secretary treasurer for 17 years. He served on the Cumberland Medical Center board from 1959-2006, acting as secretary from 1966 to 2006; also, Mr. Miller served as Uplands Retirement Village chairman from 1966-1983, achieving Emeritus status on both boards as well as United Fund of Cumberland County. He was a member of the Crossville Retail Merchants Association from 1970-2000. He was an active volunteer in numerous nonprofit organizations including PTA, 4-H, American Red Cross, Hilltoppers, Kids, Inc. and The Arc during his life. He began attending Crab Orchard Senior Citizens in 2002.
Survivors include his daughter and son in law, Glenda and Randy Bond of Crossville; and grandsons, Michael and Scott Bond of Crossville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae (Chapman) Miller; sisters, Gladys Speich and Lennis Whittaker; and brother, Lonas Miller.
Active pallbearers were Ronnie Speich, Bob Young, Joe Young, Bruce Rose, Eddie Rose, Charles Melton, Tony Hall and Johnny Hale. Honorary pallbearers included members of the Cumberland Medical Center board of directors, administrative staff and the Crossville Breakfast Rotary — J. W. Brown; Edwin Andersen; James Barnawell, MD; Kenneth Burnett; Robert Couch; Robert Harrison; William Mayberry III; Reynaldo Olaechea, MD; Larry Reed, MD; Cosby Stone; Brett York; Jim McMackin; Jenny Martin; Julie Thompson; Jinger Loggins; Sharon Parker; Ken Stephens; Ron Bodary; Stan Bise; Burl Harris; Jim Dunigan; Howard Mercer; Bob Mitchell; Rob Safdie; Norm Westerbuhr; and Mike Denny.
