Former Palmer resident, Robert L. Bronson, 71, died Feb. 6, 1997, at the Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua, Wis. A service was at the Torkelson Funeral Chapel in Cashton, Wisc. Pastor Bery Daines presiding. Burial followed in the Portland Cemetery outside of Cashton.
Mr. Bronson was born June 21, 1925, in Melvina, Wisc., to Carl and Gladys (Anderson) Bronson. After graduating from high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific Theatre. Upon discharge, he moved to Alaska where he lived for 45 years. Mr. Bronson was employed by the U.S. government as a surveyor during the construction of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline and later moved into other areas of construction. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and spent much of his free time prospecting for gold. He returned to Wisconsin in 1991 and made his home in Westby, Wis. Mr. Bronson was a member of the Matanuska Lodge No. 7 in Palmer, the Alaska Miners Association, the Westby American Legion and the VFW of Wasilla. He held the Degree of Master Mason in the Frontier Lodge 45 in LaCrosse and was a lifelong member of the Westby Snowflake Ski Club and The Rod and Gun. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William.
He is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law Bette and Edward Zinke and Juanita and Blaine Mickelson, both of Westby, Wis.; three brothers and sisters-in-law Donald and Ellen Bronson of LaCrosse, Richard and Elaine Bronson of Manitowoc, and Gary and Barbara Bronson of Allenton, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangments were made by Torkelson Funeral Service, Cashton, Wis.
