James Duke Houser spent his life farming in Henry County, Indiana. When he was 3 years old, he was badly burned when his clothes caught fire after he somehow opened a stove. One earlobe was permanently fused to the side of his face from this accident. He received his education in the Rogersville School. On Aug. 9, 1911, he married Evalena Reece. They subsequently lived on farms in Prairie, Stony Creek, Blue River, and Liberty townships in Henry County. He died suddenly as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage. A deeply religious man, he attended the Church of God and the Church of the Nazarene.
