DuWayne Giefer, 79, of Nicollet died Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Nicollet, with Father Edward J. Ardolf celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in Swan Lake Catholic Cemetery in rural Nicollet. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and one hour prior to the time of service on Tuesday at the church. DuWayne is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marnie and Matt Thoen of Golden Valley; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Beth Giefer of Eagan, Jamieson and Sally Giefer of Lexington, Ohio, Darby and Shelly Giefer of Nicollet; grandchildren, Brandon, Dusty, Kayla, Sheldon, Clara, Lydia; and a brother and sister-in-law, LuVern "Buddy" and Marion Giefer of Nicollet.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Margaret "Mickey" Giefer on April 2, 2005.

DuWayne Leonard Giefer, son of Edmund and Grace (Meurer) Giefer, was born on March 1, 1932, on the family farm in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County. DuWayne attended country school in Bernadotte Township. On September 1, 1962, DuWayne and Margaret Barker were united in marriage at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato. He was drafted into the Army and was stationed in Kansas City during the Korean War. He returned to Bernadotte Township where he farmed with his father and brother. After retiring from farming, DuWayne took up hunting and fishing full-time with his black labs and spent countless hours at the lake cabin with his grandchildren. DuWayne also had a passion for woodworking and framing. He was able to do everything from glass-cutting to matting.

DuWayne was a member of the Nicollet Conservation Club, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, Turkey Federation and St. Paul's Catholic Church.
