John Beuhring "Buren" Stratton was born on May 30, 1834, in Floyd County, Kentucky. His father, Milton Stratton, was 23 and his mother, Martha Buchanan Leslie, was 22 when John was born. The family moved to Wayne County, West Virginia where Milton owned land. Milton was killed by a falling tree 30 Oct 1841 when John was 7 years old. After Milton's death the family returned to Floyd County, Kentucky where his mother, Martha, married John Carson. John grew up in Floyd County among his Stratton/Leslie/Carson extended family.

As a young man, John settled in Shell Lake, Wisconsin. He married Anna Ingvardsdotter Anderson on December 5, 1854, in Taylors Falls, Minnesota. They had seven children in 13 years. He died on April 11, 1913, in Shell Lake, Wisconsin, having lived a long life of 78 years, and was buried there.
