U.S. Congressman. Moving with his with his parents to Arkansas, in 1869, he graduated from the Arkansas Industrial University, in 1879 and taught school at Springdale, Arkansas, (1880-81). He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1882 and commenced to practice law in Yellville, Arkansas. He served in the Arkansas State House of Representatives, (1889-91) and was prosecuting attorney of the fourteenth judicial circuit, (1890-94). In 1905, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-ninth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1915. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 72.
