He died as a young man and was never married. He died as the result of a buggy accident that occured near Webster Mills, Fulton County, PA. He was in the buggy with his brother, Rankin James Mellott, when the 'holding back strap' broke and the buggy was running up against the rear legs of the horse and the horse started kicking violently to the rear. He made his brother, Rankin jump out of the buggy in front of the old Hunter Mill. Just after his brother, Rankin jumped out, the horse kicked through the front of the buggy, striking Grover in the head. He was taken by wagon to the Baltimore Hospital (a two day trip) and Grover died at the Baltimore Hospital.
