James D. Abbott was born February 1861 in Tennessee, son of W. P. Abbott and Martha E. (maiden name unknown). The 1880 Federal Census for District 14, Tennessee (Henry Couny) shows James, age 19, born in Tennessee; and living with his father, W. P., a farmer, age 52, born in North Carolina; and his mother, Martha, age 40, born in Tennessee. Also living in the household were James' siblings: W. A., age 21; Nancy W., age 17; Emma D., age 16; John S., age 7; Charles P., age 4; and Joseph C., age 2.

In about 1887, James married Irene Boyd, who was born June 2, 1866 in Kentucky, daughter of Linn Boyd and Mary Dallas Curd. The 1900 Federal Census for Civil District 3, Tennessee (Henry County) shows James D. Abbott, age 39, a farmer, born February 1861 in Tennessee; and his wife, Irene, age 33, born June 1866 in Tennessee. Living with them were three children: Lynn Abbott, age 10, born July 1889 in Kentucky; William Abbott, age 10, born November 1890 in Kentucky; and Ruth Abbott, age 7, born June 1892 in Tennessee.

The 1910 Federal Census for Civil District 2, Tennessee (Henry County) shows James D. Abbott, age 49, a farmer, born in Tennessee; and his wife, Irene, age 44, born in Tennessee. Living with them were three children: William Abbott, age 20, born in Kentucky; Ruth Abbott, age 17, born in Tennessee; and Headley Abbott, age 7, born in Tennessee. The census shows that James and Irene have given birth to five children, of which four were still living.

The 1920 Federal Census for Durant Ward 3, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows James D. Abbott, an oil company merchant, age 58, born in Tennessee; and his wife, Irene, age 53, born in Kentucky; and their son, Headley, age 17, born in Tennessee.

The 1930 Federal Census for Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows James D. Abbott, working for an independent oil company, age 69, born in Tennessee; and his wife, Irene, age 63, born in Kentucky.

James died in 1934 and was buried in Durant in the Highland Cemetery. Irene died August 6, 1960, and was buried beside her husband.
