In 1936, he leased two quarries in Fulton County. One in Warfordsburg and one in Big Cove Tannery. He started the company with one WWI Army surplus truck. This was the first commercial quarrying in Fulton County.
The company's first big job came in 1939 with the start of the PA Turnpike project. Because of the start of the war, the highway and the stone quarry slowed considerably.
In 1944, he decided to expand into the coal mining industry. He moved his family to Hazelton for about a year. This decision was a fruitful one. By the end of the war, the coal industry was prospering and his enterprise employed approximately 200 employees.
To further expand his business, in the spring of 1948, he purchased a coal mining property in Charleston, WV and placed his son, H. B., Jr. in charge.
On July 16, 1948, he, the pilot, and a passenger flew from Bedford, PA to Charleston, WV to bring his son, H.B. Jr. home. Shortly after taking off from Charleston for the return flight home, the plane ran into a severe thunderstorm and crashed near Newberg, West Virginia. H.B., H.B., Jr., the pilot, and their geologist were all killed.
Today, through the efforts of his family, his small company has prospered into a large corporation, consisting of the H.B. Mellott Estate and Mellott Enterprises. The H.B. Mellott Estate has an equipment fleet that consists of over 700 pieces; trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, crushing plants, concrete plants, conveyors, generators and misc. other items. This family now consists of his children, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren, including another young Herman Benjamin Mellott.
