Violet Mae Abel, 85, died on Monday, Feb. 25, 2008 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison. She was born Aug. 16, 1922 in Des Moines, the daughter of John M. and Dora Mae Freesmeier Peeler. She married William F. Abel Sr. on Oct. 4, 1941 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Madison. They were happily married for 55 years before he passed away in 1997.

Violet was employed at Sheaffer Pen Company, SS Kresge, PM Place and Lampe's Drug Store. She was a member of Ss. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. Her roast beef and potatoes, pecan pie, heavenly salad and red velvet cake were the highlights of family meals. Although she suffered from arthritis most of her life, she never allowed her pain to keep her from enjoying her family and friends.

She is survived by four sons, William F. Jr. (wife Janice) of Ft. Madison, Robert J. (wife Susan) of Ft. Madison, The Most Reverend Thomas E. (partner Florentino) of Del Mar, Calif. and Michael J. (wife Amy) of Berwin, Ill.; three grandsons, Ryan (wife Erica) of Memphis, Tenn., Matthew (wife Richar') of Ft. Madison and David (wife Beth) of Cedar Rapids; five great-grandchildren; one half brother, Johnny Peeler and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Gilbert Worley.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, with the family to meet with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. with a wake service to be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28 at Ss. Mary & Joseph Church, with the Rev. Troy Richmond officiating. Burial will be in Soldiers Circle in Oakland Cemetery. A memorial has been established and contributions may be left at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory or at the church the day of the service. A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 29 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church officiated by Bishop Thomas E. Abel of the American Catholic Church Diocese of California.
