Esther was born and raised in Chicago, the youngest of seven daughters of Rev. Abraham and Katharina Wiens.

During her youth and while attending various schools, she helped with the work of the Mennonite Bible Mission, where her father was a pastor.

She graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 1937. In 1943 she graduated from Northern Baptist Seminary. In 1948 she earned a BA from Roosevelt University in Chicago. She received an MS from Emporia State Teachers College, Kansas, in 1955.

She taught at the Meade, (KS) Bible Academy from 1945-1946, and the Berean Academy, Elbing, KS, from 1947-1955. She then taught at Rosthern Junior College (Sask.) from 1955-1966.

In 1959 she was elected to the Mennonite Board of Missions. In 1962 she attended the Mennonite World Conference in Kitchener, Ontario, where she addressed a women's meeting on the subject of "Women Serving Under the Lordship of Christ in our Mennonite Churches". In 1966 during a sabbatical from Rosthern, she taught in Taiwan at Christ College.

She married George Peter Janzen in 1967. He was a Mennonite farmer, with six children.

She passed away in Rosthern on July 19, 1973, according to family accounts, from cancer.
