Mark C. Cabel, 61 years old, of Festus, Missouri passed away Wednesday March 23, 2011 at Jefferson City Regional Medical Hospital in Crystal City, Missouri.

Mark was born February 8, 1950, in St Louis, Missouri, the son of the late Harold Chris and Anna Mae (Dumbauld) Abel.

He was a graduate of Festus High School in Festus, and the University of Mo in Columbia Mo, Mark was united in marriage to Cheryl Rich, who survives of the home.

Mark first worked at Abels Sinclair Station on Main Street in Festus, Missouri and later was owner operator of Mark C. Abel insurance agency. He began his political career which spanned over 25 years and as the Festus City Treasurer. He was later elected to the Missouri House of Representatives, where he served six terms from 1985-1991 and from 1998-2004, while in the House of Representatives he served as speaker pro team, minority leader, and chaired various committees. Mark helped to create the Missouri Senior prescription drug program, the access to higher education act and other economic development legislation. He was currently serving as the Jefferson City Treasurer.

Along with his wife, Mark is survived by a stepdaughter, Melinda Contryman of St Louis, Missouri; stepson, Darron Contryman of Tokyo, Japan; a granddaughter, Joe Contryman of St Louis, Missouri; a niece Elizabeth Mouser (Rob) of Herculaneum, Missouri; a nephew, Larry (Chris) Abel of Festus, Missouri and a number of great nieces, nephews, cousins.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Stephen H. Abel who died in infantry, and Larry Vernon Abel and wife Theresa.

A memorial gathering in Marks honor will began at 4:00p.m. Friday, April 1, 2011, at Fredericks Catering Center. Private interment will be held in Presbyterian Methodist Cemetery in Festus, Missouri.
