Robert Joseph Crowder

Robert Joseph "Bob" Crowder, 65, of Stafford County died Friday, July 10, 2009, at his home, surrounded by family after a brief and courageous battle with stomach cancer.

Bob was born Aug. 27, 1943, in Washington, D.C., where he grew up. After receiving his bachelor's degree in physics at Lynchburg College, he began his career at the Naval Weapons Laboratory, now Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, in exterior ballistics where aiming data for Navy projectiles and unguided missiles were produced. He retired in 2003, after 38 years of service, ending his career as head of the Command and Combat Control Systems Division. He was the recipient of many awards and honors, including the John Adolphus Dahlgren Award in 2000.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

A longtime resident of Stafford, most of his enjoyment came from his family, and from his days spent vacationing on the Chesapeake Bay in southern Maryland. He battled and beat prostate cancer in 1998, and regularly attended local prostate cancer support groups for the past 10 years, making many new friends.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 14, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. James Vaught officiating. Burial was private.

In lieu of flowers, it was Bob's request that memorial contributions be made to either the Cancer Center of Virginia, 6105 Health Center Lane, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407, specifying that donations be utilized for the Prostate Cancer Support Group, or to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407.
