Thomas, age 25, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 10 August 1861 at Camp Butler, South Carolina. He was mustered on 10 September 1861 as a Private in Company D, 14th South Carolina Infantry. He was promoted as follows: Corporal (date unknown), Sergeant Major on 1 April 1863, 2nd Lieutenant for Company A on 24 September 1863, and promoted to Captain on 1 August 1864. His promotions to officer was due to his valor and skill as a soldier. Thomas was paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on 9 April 1865.

Thomas was the grandson of John Schuyler Carwile (1786-1852) and Elizabeth Williams (1793-1848). He was the great grandson of Zachariah Carwile (1750-1841) and Mary McMahan (1755-1833). Zachariah (1750-1841) served as a soldier in the Carolinas during the American Revolution and was at the Battle of King's Mountain.
