Extra freight train, No 242, in charge of Engineer Sigler and Conductor Foster, running light and while backing up Rich Creek extension from Gauley branch, at 9:30 am Sunday, struck a velocipede, in charge of F E Elkins and J R Wright. Mr Elkins was instantly killed and Mr Wright had some gashes cut on his head, back bruised and toes of left foot mashed off. If he survives 24 hours he has a chance of recovering. Both men were employed by the Gauley Mountain Coal Co. Elkins was 55 years of age, married and leaves a wife and five children. His home was at Mt Carbon. Wright's home is at Bryce. He is 32 years of age and single. It is claimed the train was only running 12 miles an hour. The accident, which happened 1/2 mile west of Rich Creek junction, probably occurred on a curve.
