Puddles was our very first pet. We got her on June 26, 1966, the day after our wedding. She was from a liter of kittens that my parents had from their cat. We named her "Puddles" because we were always stepping in one of her puddles--but she soon adapted to the liter box and was a wonderful pet. A few weeks after we got her we had to move from the house that we were renting because the house had been sold. Moving to our new place was riskier for Puddles since it was in the busiest part of town-right across from the school house.
Puddles favorite toy was this stuffed dog that is in the picture with her, that is why it is so dirty and ragged looking. She was always by that stuffed dog and she treated it almost like it was a kitten to her.
She liked to be outside which was a worry and at one point in time she came up missing. After searching for her with no success in finding her we put up a small reward for her. Some time passed when one day our paper boy told us that he knew where Puddles was at. A lady on the other side of town had her. Fortunately we knew the lady fairly well and we were able to get her back home.
In May of 1967 we moved to our current home that we had bought, so once again Puddles had to get introduced to a new home. We were in a quieter part of town now but Puddles still wanted the independence of being outside. She stayed home and never seemed to roam--at least not that we were aware of because she was normally in the house for the night.
In early winter of 1969, she didn't come when I called her in for her to be fed. We searched and kept trying to find her but with no luck. It was a sad day and time when in the spring as the snow melted my husband found her laying under the eaves of the front kitchen window. Though we are not certain we believe she may have been hit by falling ice. We only had her for about three years but have fond memories of her as our first pet in our early years of marriage.
She is buried in our back yard as are all of our special furry friends who have brightened our home with their love and presence.
