"About 700 officers and men were lost when the Langley was sunk off Java Feb. 27 and the naval tanker Pecos was sent to the bottom on March 1. The Pecos was carrying the Langley survivors, and only one-third of the crews of the two ships were saved, the Navy announced last night."
