Samuel Gates Dement was born in Tennessee April 23, 1823. In early childhood he moved with his parents to Illinois, later coming to Iowa. In 1849 he went to California, where he remained seven years before returning to Iowa.
In 1857 he was married to Louisa McVey and to them five children were born. One of these died in childhood and those still living are Mrs. John Bruner and Mrs. Frank Gaskill of Sutherland, Mrs. Chas Bruner of Cherokee and Thomas Dement of Anita, Iowa.
Mr. Dement had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for over fifty years. During his illness he often said " I am only waiting."
