Elmira S. "Wag" Wagoner Mitchell Hamrick, of the Maplewood Retirement Community of Bridgeport, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Grafton City Hospital in Grafton. She had formerly made her residence in Morgantown and Parkersburg.

She was born in Everett, Pa., on Dec. 23, 1914, a daughter of the late Howard J. Wagoner and Elmira Sipes Wagoner.

Elmira was educated in the Morgantown schools and was a graduate of West Virginia University, holding both B.S. and M.S. degrees in home economics education. Her career included teaching for three years in Clay County and 25 in Monongalia County and was for five years the coordinator of Adult Education for Monongalia County. In 1973, she was recognized as an Outstanding Secondary Educator of America and nominated for Teacher of the Year in Monongalia County. She was a member of the Grafton Chapter of the Red Hat Society and Bridgeport United Methodist Church and a former member of the Morgantown Chapter of Soroptimist International.

First husband, F. Ray Mitchell of Morgantown, and her second husband, Bazel A. Hamrick of Parkersburg, preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were a sister; a half-sister; two half-brothers; and a grandson, Josh Halstead.

She is survived by two sons, David J. Mitchell and wife, Eugenia, of Washington, D.C., and former wife, Karen, of Columbus, Ohio, and Timothy M. Mitchell and wife, Kathy, of Waxahachie, Texas; and stepdaughter, Patricia Halstead and husband, Charles, of Williamstown. There are also six grandchildren, Amy Mitchell Skinner and husband, Wes, Beverly Mitchell Wade and husband, Dustin, and Christie Mitchell Heiny and husband, Michael, all of the Dallas, Texas, area, Kathleen Mitchell of Hilliard, Ohio, Christopher Mitchell of Columbus, Ohio, and Christina Hambery and husband, Staban, of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and six great-grandchildren. Wag is also survived by her dear niece, Barbara Wagoner Bartlett and husband, Thomas, of Grafton, W.Va.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday and from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ford Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Bridgeport. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home, with the Rev. Steven E. Dorsey and Pete Staud officiating. Interment will follow at the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Morgantown, W.Va.
